Welcome to the town of Nafplio

About Nafplio

Being the first capital of Greece after the Greek Revolution of 1821 the town of Nafplio is full of history with monuments and buildings of historic significance at every step. Famous for it's castles and fortresses like the Palamidi castle and the sea fort of Bourtzi, Nafplio is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Greece, a cosmopolitan place with visitors from all over the world all year round and a lovely romantic destination in Greece.

Take a walk around town, stroll through the narrow streets of the Old Town of Nafplio or walk down the harbour, see the shops and later on visit Kellari Restaurant in Nafplio and enjoy authentic Greek & Mediterranean cuisine.

Palamidi Castle

The Palamidi castle in Nafplio is a trademark of the city, known for it's legendary 999 steps to the top.
The Palamidi castle was built in 1687 by the Venetians after a vicious battle with the Ottoman Turks, during the Venitian-Turkish War. In 1715, during the last Venitian-Turkish War the Palamidi was taken under Turkish control after an explosion blew up part of the fortress. The castle's uses changed from era to era but it was also used as a prison where Theodoros Kolokotronis, one of the leader of the Greek Revolution, was imprisoned after being charged with high treason.

Today it is accessible by it's famous steps or can be accessed by car following a road that leads to the back entrance of the castle, while offering unbelievable views of the town of Nafplio and the Argolida area.

Bourtzi Castle

The sea fort of Bourtzi is Nafplio's most famous site. The castle was built by the Venetians in 1417, after realising the strategic importance of the islet. The whole structure was built with the defence of Nafplio in mind, equipped with cannons and a chain that would close of the entrance to Nafplio harbour. Like many other buildings in the Old Town of Nafplio Bourtzi had many uses during different eras one of them being the housing of the executioner of Palamidi. Surprisingly at some point is was also used as a hotel and a restaurant.

Reaching this fortress might seem difficult but water-taxis leaving from Nafplio harbour make it easily accessible and a fun ride.

Acronafplia

The town has been inhabited since ancient times and the ancient castle of Acronafplia is the perfect hint. The lower walls were constructed during the Bronze Age and the Old Town of Nafplio was restricted inside the walls of the Nafplio castle, until the arrival of the Venetians. Later additions were made to the structure, by Venetians and Turks giving Acronafplia its modern day look. The Turkish called it "Iç Kale" meaning "inner castle" or "citadel". There are tunnels that connect different part of the castle but most have been closed for safety.

It is a must visit, very close to the centre of the Old Town of Nafplio and easily accessible on foot while the views of Arvanitia beach and the Argolic Gulf are incredible.
